History
This version of the Nevada Western is my
3rd HOn3 Narrow Gauge layout. The first was
a 4x8 layout back in the late 1970's in college,
built using
Shinohara track and Hydrocal & screen wire,
and included many Fine Scale Miniatures kits
I had assembled.
Motive power was a single WSM C-25 I had
saved up for.
The
2nd NW was in the 1980 timeframe and was an
X shaped layout based upon
a Model Railroader article, with each arm of
the
cross being a different geographical region.
Great concept, but I never got past the initial
scenery stage before having to move and leave
it behind.
Over the
next 20 years life intervened, with only
a few kit and scratch built structures
and rolling stock through the years to
keep me in the hobby.
In
2001, with the daughter off to college,
an
extra
bedroom
became
the site of the 3rd NW layout, with
this
one advancing the farthest so far.
With only about 6 years until I will
need to move
again,
I decided to keep this layout small
- but very
detailed. I would use it to test methods
and materials
for what will be my "retirement" layout,
a 24'
x 60'
basement layout. As such, I have compared
many tried and true methods against
the newer products and materials available
since I
first started. Some things worked,
some
didn't. Many old standards have become
dated. I have
used the photos to capture the
winners and losers for future reference
on the next
layout. As such, from time to time
you will come across the notation "NTS"
in the caption - standing for "note
to self..." |
